Graduate student fellowships – 2018/19
The CSRS offers several graduate student fellowships per year.
Ian H. Stewart Graduate Student Fellowships & Vandekerkhove Graduate Student Fellowships
The Centre for Studies in Religion and Society welcomes applications from graduate students for one-year fellowship appointments at the centre commencing September, 2018.
Topics
In accord with the centre’s mandate, research fellows should be working on projects that involve the scholarly study of religion in relation to any aspect of society and culture, both contemporary and historical. This includes, but is not limited to, critical examinations of religious themes in the areas of ethics, health, environment, public policy, gender, sexual identity, technology, human conflict, art, literature, the media, law, and social currents and debates within philosophy and/or the natural sciences. Religion does not need to be the sole or central focus of the student’s research, but it should be a significant consideration. Applications from all disciplinary backgrounds are welcome.
Eligibility
Although most recipients will be UVic students, we may also award a fellowship to visiting graduate students whose projects fall within the Centre’s research mandate as described above. The awards are intended for students who have completed course work and will be at the writing stage of their graduate thesis or dissertation during the period of their fellowship. We will also consider students enrolled in one- year MA programs. Students who have received a previous CSRS award at the MA level may not reapply until they are registered in a PhD program. PhD students may receive a CSRS award only once. Applicants may apply for fellowships at other centres at the university; however, because this is a residential fellowship, students are only eligible to accept one of these awards.
Value
$5,000 per fellowship, plus office space at the CSRS. Fellows will have access to a mailbox located in the CSRS, fax, scanner and photocopier services; and opportunities to participate in all CSRS social and academic activities.
Number
Up to seven fellowships are available.
Conditions
Graduate Student Fellows must (a) move into the research space provided in the centre and be present in the Centre on a regular basis (preferably 3 times each week or more) throughout the duration of the fellowship; (b) give a public lecture or seminar presentation on a theme in the area of the research being conducted; (c) shortly after the conclusion of the fellowship, submit to the director a brief written report of the progress that was made; (d) acknowledge the centre in any published work and in any public presentation that appears as a result of the studies that were pursued during this period; (e) notify the CSRS of the title and publishing details of the completed thesis or dissertation as well as publishing information for any books or articles that result from this time at the centre.
Application Procedure
Applications are accepted once a year via email and should include: a current CV; transcripts; supporting letters from both the applicant’s supervisor and a current or former professor, and a completed graduate student fellowship application form. Please note that any research involving human subjects will require approval of the UVic Ethics Review Board. Students who intend to conduct research with human subjects should indicate whether they have applied for ethics approval and what the timeframe for ethics approval will be. Applications are reviewed by the CSRS Program Committee. All materials should be submitted via email to csrs@uvic.ca, indicating attention to Dr. Paul Bramadat, Director, Centre for Studies in Religion and Society. Candidates are responsible for ensuring their applications are complete and submitted by the competition deadlines. Late applications will not be reviewed.

Heather J. Lindstedt and Brian A. Pollick Fellowship
The Centre for Studies in Religion and Society welcomes applications from Art History and Visual Studies PhD (post-comprehensive) graduate students for one-year fellowship appointments at the centre commencing September, 2018.
Eligibility
The student must be a Art History and Visual Studies PhD program and have completed their comprehensive exam.
If there is no eligible post-comprehensive doctoral student, the award will be given to an alternate graduate student according to the following preference:
- A MA student in Art History and Visual Studies
- A graduate student in Fine Arts working in some aspect of visual studies.
- A graduate student whose thesis/dissertation involvesany aspect of the medieval/early-modern time period, in any discipline.
- Any graduate student the CSRS deems qualified.
Value
